Thank you for this illuminating post. Does the presser foot fit into this equation in some way? I have a straight stitch presser foot with a small round hole for the needle (old Bernina 1230) but no straight stitch needle plate.

The part about how decorative stitches punch 5-10 holes per 2mm versus 1 hole for straight stitchs makes so much sense for why my buttonholes always looked janky until I started using tearaway stabilizer. I'd never thought about the needle plate hole size as the actual culprit before tho.
