Nice story, Reminds me of when I was growing up in my old neighborhood with some those same type of characters. I remember a friend owned me money and paid me back with a counterfeit $20 bill.

Love your articles about sewing machines. I grew up in Richmond in the 50's and in the early 60's bought my first sewing machine from a shop on McDonald Avenue. Some time later the foot pedal got stuck under a piece of furniture and I was worried that it would be damaged it so I called the shop and instead of reassuring me that I had not damaged it, they laughed at me. I vowed never to buy anything else from them again!
